Better Than Ever…Spring Lake Boardwalk is Back!

Spring Lake Boardwalk rebuilt

Just like the ocean waves that break and then rebuild, the Spring Lake boardwalk is back…better than ever and ready for the summer at the Jersey Shore. On a beautiful (albeit chilly) early May afternoon in 2013, I am able to sit with my legs dangling over the newly-rebuilt Spring Lake boardwalk. Six months ago, this vision seemed like a pipe dream.

When Sandy came violently storming in, many boardwalks along the Jersey Shore Coastline were ripped up and blown away. And the Spring Lake boardwalk was, unfortunately, not one of the few that were spared. In fact, many were saying, “Not again!” It had been just a little over a year since Irene’s surge took out about two-thirds of it. It was rebuilt just in time for Sandy to destroy it all over again.

Spring Lake Boardwalk rebuilt Timbertech

A great deal of planning went into the rebuild of the Spring Lake boardwalk after Sandy devastated the Jersey Shore. The cement pillars seem to be able to weather the storms – so the question was how to rebuild the boards so they can withstand future storms as well. They ended up rebuilding using a composite called TimberTech. TimberTech is low maintenance, safe, and durable – and it looks pretty too! I was able to find a small piece of the composite laying around. I picked it up to find that it was actually quite heavy. They secured 4×12 lumber underneath the composite (made specifically for docks and boardwalks) and on top of the existing cement pilings. They also used metal stanchions to straddle the joined areas, allowing for more protection. Dune bulkheads are also being discussed by the town for added protection.

Spring Lake Boardwalk rebuilt

The boardwalk looks so beautiful now, you would never know that devastation occurred just six months ago. While I sat reading my book and watching my daughter do gymnastics on the beach, others were jogging past me and couples strolled happily hand in hand. The Spring Lake boardwalk is back and ready for public enjoyment. But I give you fair warning…you’re not going to want to leave.
