Tre Amici al Piccolo Forno

This past Saturday night, we decided to check out Tre Amici al Piccolo Forno at 628 Ocean Ave in Long Branch. When I lived in Long Branch many years ago, this was one of my favorite places to eat a great traditional Italian meal. Over the years the name has changed – but I went back, hoping that the quality of the food and service didn’t change with it.

We had 7:15 reservations – and it’s a good thing we did, because the place was packed. We were promptly seated, and then they opened our wine and brought a plate of bruschetta to the table – always a very good way to start! The server told us the specials and handed us menus. For appetizers, they had a variety of salads, Italian cheeses, and some hot starters. The four of us decided on the Poached Pear Salad, the Imported Burrata Cheese plate, and a Caeser salad – plenty of food for the table. The Burrata cheese, which is a very creamy and smooth version of mozzarella, was served with garlic toast – it was excellent!

After finishing off the delicious appetizers, we moved on to the main course. There was a lot to choose from, including Italian standards like Piccata, Parmesan, Marsala, and Francaise in chicken or veal, as well as steak, chicken, and fish entrées. Everyone at our table decided pasta would be the entrée of the evening: we had an order each of linguini with red clam sauce and with white clam sauce, a plate of homemade Gnocchi Sorrentina (potato gnocchi with mozzarella, pecorino and basil), and I tried the Pappardelle Bolognese (homemade pappardelle noodles with a meat sauce). Both linguini dishes came out loaded with clams in the shell over homemade linguini, the gnocchi tasted fresh, and my meat sauce was delicious – all four of us were very happy with our meals. The only problem we encountered was that none of us saved room for dessert! Tre Amici has a separate dessert menu, complete with different coffees – we didn’t get to try any, but I saw a piece of chocolate cake go by that looked delicious.

Overall we had a great meal, a fantastic experience, and good fun with wonderful friends. Everything from the bruschetta to the main course was just excellent. If you plan on going on a weekend, be sure to make reservations – this place is very busy. Also, they do not have a liquor license so don’t forget to bring your favorite bottle of wine with you!
