Caputo’s: A Fifth Generation Italian Bakery on the Jersey Shore

I was in Long Branch this morning looking for breakfast. My first thought was a trip to Dunkin Donuts, or maybe a quick bagel at one of the many local bagel shops. Both are great standby options – but I needed something different. So, I decided to go to one of my favorite bakeries in NJ – Caputo’s, located in Ursula Plaza on Ocean Blvd in Long Branch.

Caputo’s has been a Long Branch fixture for over 30 years. This business started in Brooklyn in 1923, and after 27 successful years in NY they set up shop on S. Broadway in Long Branch. They stayed in that location until the redevelopment boom hit the shore area, and they were forced to build a new location on Ocean Blvd in Ursula Plaza. This has been home for Caputos since 1988.

Caputo’s is a fifth generation family owned business that has made its name by making absolutely exceptional baked goods. They offer a wide range of Italian pastries, cannolis, breads, custom cakes, cupcakes (is there anything better than bakery cupcakes with butter cream icing?), and Italian cookies. Caputo’s also makes decadent custom wedding cakes! Like many great Italian bakeries, they also serve a great cup of coffee – in fact, here you will find some of the best coffee on the Jersey shore. Caputo’s is a perfect spot to stop for a quick coffee and pastry in the morning – or in the afternoon for a pick-me-up, or even in the early evening (if you don’t mind spoiling your dinner)! My point is that this bakery on the Jersey Shore is a great option any time of day.

When I stopped in this morning, the people in front of me in line ordered boxes of pastries and Italian bread – when it was my turn, I ordered an apple turnover and a decaf coffee. While I was on line I had a chance to look over all the baked goods that they offer. The selection was enormous – and this place smelled divine! They are definitely a full service bakery, and everything looked delicious.

Make sure you visit Caputo’s next time you are in Long Branch, and you will find out why they have been in business for almost 100 years. Once you taste their pastries, bread, or cakes you will definitely be back!
