What Home Style Is Right For You?

Buying a home can be a wonderfully exciting experience. But, where do you start? While there are many factors to consider – like finances, affordability, school system, etc. – the first thing you should do is narrow down the style of house that you desire. It can get confusing, so if you are looking for a single-family home, let me describe some of the home styles that may work for you.

  1. Ranch. A ranch is a single-story home and perfect for anyone who does not want to deal with steps. Ranches will typically have an open floor plan, and offer the convenience of everything being located on the same floor – the bedrooms, the kitchen, dining room, living room, the laundry room, etc. Many times a ranch will have a basement, but it’s not an area of the house that you ever have to venture into unless you want to.
  2. Colonial. A traditional colonial is a two-story home. Most of the time, the main living area is on the first floor – the kitchen, dining room, living room, family room. Bedrooms and bathrooms will typically be found on the second floor, although many newer colonials are being built with a first-floor bedroom as well. Most colonials will have an attic that is either finished or unfinished. At the Jersey Shore, it may be difficult to find a colonial with a basement because of the proximity of so many homes to the water.
  3. Great Bi-Level Home!:

  4. Cape Cod. A cape cod is generally a story and a half. A typical cape cod has a master on the first floor with the rest of the main living areas, and two smaller bedrooms at the top of a central staircase.
  5. Bi-Level. The front-door entry is typically mid-way between the two floors. Most often, the stairway up leads to the kitchen, living room, dining room and some bedrooms and baths. The stairway down typically has at least one bedroom and full bath and a den area. The bi-level is a great layout for anyone desiring a living area somewhat separated for different members of the household.

These are just a few of the different styles of homes, and while the descriptions above are of the most typical, you will find variations on every type at the Jersey Shore. There are many other styles, as well. Contact me and I will help you find the home that is just right for you!
