Spectacular new listing in Apple Ridge, Wall Township!

The beautiful beaches of the Jersey Shore are back, and so is New Jersey’s Top 10 Beaches contest! After a one-year hiatus, the survey – which was created in 2008 – is once again available to take your votes.

What’s your favorite beach? It’s a differentnew-jersey-top-ten-beaches-logo question than asking, “What’s your favorite beach town?”. There are many who love the town they live in, or love the town they vacation in, but the beach they love to go to may reside somewhere else. Whatever your personal preference, now’s your chance to make your opinion count.

They’ve changed the ballot this year to accommodate different types of beach goers: Day Trips, Ecotourism, and Family Vacations. Below are some criteria that they would like you to consider before casting your vote:

  • The cost of access to your favorite beach
  • Parking availability
  • Other accommodations, like showers, concession stands, handicap access, and more
  • Nature-based activities

As a complement to their survey, they have also tied in a Rain Barrel Art Project, bundling local art, tourism, and environmental education  into a beachy project.

You can cast your ballot through midnight on April 30th. So, consider your decision carefully. Make sure your pick is worthy of a Top 10 spot!

Valentines Day 2014The snow has been falling…and falling…and falling. Even at the Jersey Shore. But, if you embrace winter, you will find that it is just one more reason to love living by the beach. If you’re lucky enough to have an ocean view, there’s nothing like watching the snow waft over the Atlantic.

Today is Valentine’s Day, and for many this particular Valentine’s Day may be marked by cancelled dinner reservations, flights that never took off, and another day of school closings. But, if you look a little closer, you may just see big, beautiful snowflakes blowing softly from the sky or icicles glistening off the roof of a boardwalk pavilion or snow-capped jetties. Valentine’s Day also means we’re that much closer to sunscreen and flip flops. So, chin up and enjoy the one’s you love today with the knowledge that sand between your toes is just around the corner.

If you’re at the Jersey Shore and still looking for a place to take your loved one for a romantic dinner, try one of these excellent restaurants (many have special Valentine’s Day menus all weekend long):

  • Black Trumpet – 1505 Ocean Avenue, Spring Lake
  • Avenue – 23 Ocean Avenue, Long Branch
  • La Dolce Vita – 400 Ocean Avenue, Belmar
  • Salt Creek Grille – 4 Bingham Avenue, Rumson
  • Lubrano’s Trattoria – 2439 Route 34 S, Wall Township
  • Giamano’s Restaurant – 301 Main Street, Bradley Beach
  • Maria’s Italian Cuisine – 165 Main Street, Manasquan
  • Shipwreck Grill – 720 Ashley Avenue, Brielle
  • Anjelica’s Restaurant – 1070 Ocean Avenue, Sea Bright
  • Stella Marina – 800 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park

Happy Valentine’s Day from your Jersey Shore Specialist!

Ocean views you can’t help but love!

I am going to start this blog with a quote from one of America’s greatest philosophers, Homer J. Simpson. “Donuts. Is there anything they can’t do?”

I am a big believer in that statement. I can come up with an excuse to eat donuts any time of the day. So, that is what compelled me to try a new donut shop in Farmingdale, The Donut and Coffee Company. I have driven by this place at least 20 times in the last couple of months and decided I needed to try it.

I walked into the shop on Sunday morning and the first thing I noticed was that they don’t have any donuts. Wait. What? I expected a donut shop similar to Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme where they display their donuts behind the counter. Not here. That’s because all of their donuts are made fresh to order. Their donut display consists of a menu.Donut and Coffee Company Collage

These were not your average donuts. The menu consisted of donuts like no others…Gourmet Hand Dipped Donuts made to order. Donuts with cool names, like Asbury Rainbow (vanilla glaze with sprinkles), Funky Monkey (banana glaze & chopped peanuts & chocolate chips), and DoCo LoCo (strawberry glaze & vanilla drizzle & crushed oreos) to name a few.

And, then I noticed an item on the menu called a Kronut (a croissant/donut hybrid). I decided I needed to try one of them. Also made to order, DoCo’s Kronuts come filled with any of their donut toppings and glazes, including some specialty fillings like Boston Cream and Cannoli. I decided to try the Boston Cream Kronut, an Asbury Rainbow, and a traditional glazed. I know, not real imaginative.

I placed the order and moved to the side of the counter so I could watch the process. They make each donut individually. First they cook (fry?) the dough, let it cool, and then they place it in the glaze and add the topping. After that, they package it to go. The Kronut was a little different. They made the shell, filled it with the cream and drizzled it with chocolate. It looked almost too good to eat (ok, I forced myself to eat it due to the pressure to review the donut shop).

The final product was fantastic!  Ok, maybe better than fantastic. Truthfully, I don’t think mere words can do these donuts justice. I love hot and fresh donuts and these were perfect! If you have never had a warm, fresh donut, you are missing something special. The donuts were spectacular, but the Kronut was like tasting a piece of heaven. The best way to describe it was that it was very similar to a Saint Joseph’s cake. More like dessert than breakfast. I usually prefer dessert to breakfast, so this worked out great for me.

Overall, if you love donuts, try The Donut and Coffee Shop in Farmingdale. It is not to be missed. Expect a little bit of a wait (as they are all made to order) and they are a bit more expensive than a traditional donut, but all I can say is they are definitely worth the wait and you absolutely get what you pay for!
