Donut and Coffee Company – Gourmet Hand-Dipped Donuts

I am going to start this blog with a quote from one of America’s greatest philosophers, Homer J. Simpson. “Donuts. Is there anything they can’t do?”

I am a big believer in that statement. I can come up with an excuse to eat donuts any time of the day. So, that is what compelled me to try a new donut shop in Farmingdale, The Donut and Coffee Company. I have driven by this place at least 20 times in the last couple of months and decided I needed to try it.

I walked into the shop on Sunday morning and the first thing I noticed was that they don’t have any donuts. Wait. What? I expected a donut shop similar to Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme where they display their donuts behind the counter. Not here. That’s because all of their donuts are made fresh to order. Their donut display consists of a menu.Donut and Coffee Company Collage

These were not your average donuts. The menu consisted of donuts like no others…Gourmet Hand Dipped Donuts made to order. Donuts with cool names, like Asbury Rainbow (vanilla glaze with sprinkles), Funky Monkey (banana glaze & chopped peanuts & chocolate chips), and DoCo LoCo (strawberry glaze & vanilla drizzle & crushed oreos) to name a few.

And, then I noticed an item on the menu called a Kronut (a croissant/donut hybrid). I decided I needed to try one of them. Also made to order, DoCo’s Kronuts come filled with any of their donut toppings and glazes, including some specialty fillings like Boston Cream and Cannoli. I decided to try the Boston Cream Kronut, an Asbury Rainbow, and a traditional glazed. I know, not real imaginative.

I placed the order and moved to the side of the counter so I could watch the process. They make each donut individually. First they cook (fry?) the dough, let it cool, and then they place it in the glaze and add the topping. After that, they package it to go. The Kronut was a little different. They made the shell, filled it with the cream and drizzled it with chocolate. It looked almost too good to eat (ok, I forced myself to eat it due to the pressure to review the donut shop).

The final product was fantastic!  Ok, maybe better than fantastic. Truthfully, I don’t think mere words can do these donuts justice. I love hot and fresh donuts and these were perfect! If you have never had a warm, fresh donut, you are missing something special. The donuts were spectacular, but the Kronut was like tasting a piece of heaven. The best way to describe it was that it was very similar to a Saint Joseph’s cake. More like dessert than breakfast. I usually prefer dessert to breakfast, so this worked out great for me.

Overall, if you love donuts, try The Donut and Coffee Shop in Farmingdale. It is not to be missed. Expect a little bit of a wait (as they are all made to order) and they are a bit more expensive than a traditional donut, but all I can say is they are definitely worth the wait and you absolutely get what you pay for!
