People typically want a vacation home for two reasons. One is to build lifelong memories with their families and the other is to have a place to get away from the routine and stress of their daily lives.

For obvious reasons, location tends to be more important to the vacation-home buyer than the house itself. When I ask people what they want in a second home, their answers more frequently than not, have nothing to do with the home. They want to be on a golf course, on the river, near the ocean. They want a water view. They want easy accessibility to NYC, Philadelphia, or Princeton. They want to be in a location that has a quaint Main Street.

House “wants” also tend to be quite different.

  • The number of bedrooms matters, because they want to be able to entertain their friends and family. And, let’s face it…when you buy a vacation home, you discover friends that you never knew you had before. But, unlike a primary home, the size of the bedrooms and the number of bathrooms aren’t as big of a concern.
  • Other “wants” include items such as a pool, a tennis court, an outdoor shower, a front porch, a balcony.

I am often asked what the hot locales are. Well, my answer is really dependent on what the desires are of the person asking the question. Each town on the Jersey Shore has its own uniqueness.

  • If you want a house on the ocean, you won’t be able to find one in towns like Brielle or Rumson. But, if you want to dock your boat on the river in your backyard, these are the perfect spots.
  • Spring Lake and Ocean Grove are towns that are easy to bike around.
  • Long Branch offers a large selection of condos/townhouses on the oceanfront, while Sea Girt offers single family homes only.

There are some great benefits to owning a home at the Jersey Shore.

  • Easy accessibility to metropolitan areas means that you can make spur of the moment decisions to go to your vacation home…no pre-planning is necessary. Also, commuting is very easy if you work in NYC. You can take a bus, the train, a ferry, or even a helicopter!
  • Almost any type of fun activity is within reach, regardless of which town you decide on. Beach, surf, golf, walking trails, boating, water skiing, fishing, dining, shopping, nightlife, etc. It’s all yours for the taking.
  • And, finally, you may find that renting your vacation home will help to offset some of the costs when you are not using it.
